21-28 Jul—La Festa de Noantri Trastevere

Each year in late July, Rome's Trastevere neighborhood stages the Fest de Noantri, a celebration of the uniqueness of the neighborhood and it inhabitants and a festival in honor of their patroness, the Madonna Flumarola. Streets are closed. Stalls selling porchetta, crepes, and other treats are set up. And the populace pour out to enjoy the procession, folk music, dancing and fireworks.

8 Aug—Feast of Our Lady of the Snow

Legend has it that on the night of August 4-5, 352 AD, both an aristocratic couple and the pope were visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary in a dream and asked to build a church in her honor on Esquiline Hill. They would know the exact spot because it would be covered by snow. The next day, they found a large area covered in snow. The outline was staked out, and the church built. Every year at the feast day mass at Santa Maria Maggiore, white rose petals fall in honor of the Blessed Mother.
